Western businesses backtrack on their Russia exit plans

Western companies, including Avon Products, Air Liquide and Reckitt, have remained in Russia despite saying they planned to leave after the invasion of Ukraine, as bureaucratic obstacles increase and consumer activity rebounds.The Natura-owned cosmetics brand, the French industrial gas producer and the UK consumer group that produces everything from painkillers to condoms are among hundreds of western groups that have stayed in the country since the full-scale invasion in 2022.“Many European companies have found themselves really between a rock and a hard place,” said one executive working with western companies in the country. “They said they’d leave. They were presented with a choice of buyers that were unacceptable to them.”Overall, more than 2,100 multinationals have stayed in Russia since 2022, the Kyiv School of Economics has found, compared with about 1,600 international companies that have either quit the market or scaled back operations.A rebound in consumer activity and “bureaucratic obstacles” are making the companies stay, the outlet suggested.

A Ukrainian F-16 jet fighter was destroyed in a crash Monday, just weeks after the first of the American-made aircraft arrived in Ukraine, according to U.S. and Ukrainian officials.Initial reports indicate the jet wasn’t shot down by enemy fire, although the incident occurred during a massive Russian missile barrage across the country Monday, U.S. officials said.The General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said contact had been lost with the jet while it was approaching its next target.Ukraine used the jets for the first time in combat to shoot down Russian missiles during the strikes this week, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Pentagon referred questions to the Ukrainian Air Force for comment. The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement that a pilot, Oleksiy Mes, was killed in combat while helping repel the missile attack on Monday.

He did not elaborate, but said there was an additional secret addendum that he could not disclose.The plan, he said, also envisaged a Western role defending Ukraine's natural mineral resources from Russian attacks as well as post-war reconstruction pledges.The speech was attended by his top military, intelligence and political brass as well as lawmakers, some of whom occasionally stood up to applaud.Ukraine faces both difficulties and uncertainty ahead of the U.S. election that could return Donald Trump to the White House.The Republican former president has pledged to rapidly end the war before entering office if he wins, an idea that Kyiv's supporters fear would involve big concessions in the name of a quick deal.Zelenskiy met U.S. President Joe Biden, his key ally, in Washington at the end of the September to present the plan. A complaint unsealed Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn charges Asif Merchant, 46, of Pakistan, with a murder-for-hire plot to assassinate a politician or U.S. government official on American soil. Authorities said they foiled the plot before any violence could be attempted — in part because the people Merchant allegedly tried to hire were undercover FBI agents.According to court documents, Merchant in June met with what he thought were hit men, and told them he would have a number of assignments for them, including an assassination of targets whom he would identify later.Merchant was arrested, according to court papers, on July 12 — one day before a 20-year-old man in Pennsylvania fired shots during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., grazing Trump’s ear. Investigators do not believe the Iranian plot and the actions by the Pennsylvania gunmen are related, according to law enforcement officials.The alleged Iranian-backed plot, however, had raised concerns about Trump’s safety in the weeks before the shooting, according to U.S. officials familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.
