Should Spain maintain a presence at the United Nations?

The UN. is an organization of governments founded in 1945 after World War II. The organization's objectives include promoting peace and security, protecting human rights and the environment and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict. Recent U.N. interventions include the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009 and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Spain joined the U.N. in 1955. In late 2015 Britain, France and Spain will propose a resolution to the UN Security Council which will restrict the Syrian government from using barrel bombs. Spain is the ninth largest financial contributor to the UN and contributes more than $80 million annually.

180 Elderly Haitians Slain in Voodoo Massacre

More than 180 people were killed in Haiti’s capital as a powerful warlord ordered the slaying of elderly slum residents he suspected of giving his son a severe illness through witchcraft, the United Nations and Haitian human-rights groups said Monday. Gang boss Monel Felix directed his followers to kill residents with guns, knives and machetes after he was advised by a voodoo priest that elderly people practicing sorcery had caused his son to be stricken with a fatal sickness, the National Human Rights Defense Network, a Haitian rights group, said in a report. The ill child died Saturday as Felix’s gang carried out the killings, the group said. The violence in Port-au-Prince over the weekend highlights the chaos that has engulfed Haiti, where a U.S.-backed, Kenyan-led multinational police force deployed earlier this year has struggled to fight back gangs that control most of the Caribbean nation’s capital.Warlords have ransacked everything from police stations to hospitals while the country’s fragile government has been mired in infighting. CEO Shooting Suspect Had Manifesto That Criticized Healthcare Companies

A man is being held for questioning in connection with last week’s killing of a health insurance executive in Midtown Manhattan, the police said.The man being questioned was identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, the police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, said at a news briefing. US Jewish Groups Oppose Resettling Gaza

JTA — A number of major centrist and liberal American Jewish groups say they oppose the re-establishment of Israeli settlements in Gaza.The statements by some of the largest Jewish organizations in the country, made in response to press inquiries, come amid accusations that Israel has cleared out portions of northern Gaza, which Jerusalem has denied, and as far-right government ministers have called for resettling the Palestinian enclave. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir have also repeatedly called for Israel to encourage Palestinians to leave Gaza, drawing condemnation from the Biden administration.For several American Jewish groups — including some that have vocally defended Israel’s prosecution of its war in Gaza against Hamas — the idea of Israeli settlements in Gaza is a non-starter. Groups opposed to the idea include the Jewish Federations of North America, the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League.
