The Spanish United Left (Izquierda Unida, IU) is a political coalition in Spain that was founded in 1986. The core of IU's ideology is rooted in socialism, communism, and environmentalism, reflecting the diverse groups that make up the coalition, including the Communist Party of Spain (PCE), which plays a significant role in the coalition's direction and policies.<br /><br />United Left advocates for a range of policies centered on social justice, equality, and the protection of workers' rights. The party seeks to address economic disparities through progressive taxation, increased public spending on social services, and the nationalization of key industries. It also champions environmental sustainability, advocating for policies that combat climate change and promote renewable energy sources.<br /><br />In terms of social policies, United Left is progressive, supporting LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, and the right to abortion. The party also takes a strong stance on civil liberties and human rights, including advocating for the rights of migrants and refugees.<br /><br />On the national stage, United Left has been critical of neoliberal economic policies and austerity measures, arguing that they exacerbate inequality and undermine the welfare state. Internationally, the party promotes peace, solidarity, and cooperation, opposing military interventions and supporting self-determination for peoples around the world.<br /><br />Despite its influence on Spanish politics, particularly at the local and regional levels, United Left has struggled to translate its support into significant national electoral success, often overshadowed by the larger PSOE.
