Senate Passes Ukraine, Israel Aid

The Senate passed a long-delayed $95.3 billion foreign-aid package sending much-needed ammunition and military equipment to beleaguered Ukrainian soldiers and fortifying Israel’s missile defense systems, while also forcing the sale of Chinese-controlled TikTok in the U.S.The 79-to-18 vote brought to a close months of wrenching debate over Ukraine that sharply split the Republican Party, with rank-and-file members openly rebelling against their leaders. The fight also called into question both how far the U.S. would go to defend the country, now in the third year of trying to repel Russia’s invasion, as well as America’s leadership role in the world.The measure passed the House on Saturday and now goes to President Biden’s desk. Biden, who has been pushing for a big foreign-aid package since the fall, said he would quickly sign the measure into law Wednesday.The measure contains money for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as well as humanitarian aid for Gaza—largely matching an earlier Senate bill—plus additions made by the House, such as sanctions on Russia and Iran and the TikTok provision. Leaders in the GOP-controlled House also changed roughly $9.5 billion in economic aid to Ukraine into forgivable loans rather than grants, to make it more politically palatable to Republicans.

Bernie Sanders Introduces Amendment To Block Israel Military Funding

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that he would put forth an amendment to remove offensive military funding for Israel from a House-passed aid package that the Senate is set to consider this week.The amendment would “cut billions in offensive military funding to Israel from the proposed national security supplemental package,” Sanders (I-Vt.) said in a statement. The package, approved by the Republican-controlled House over the weekend, includes $17 billion in unconditional military assistance to the Israeli government, which stands accused on the world stage of perpetrating genocide in Gaza.The senator said he would also offer an amendment to “protect essential humanitarian operations” in the Gaza Strip, where millions of people are facing the possibility of starvation due to Israel’s suffocating and illegal blockade. At least 28 children under the age of 12 have starved to death in Gaza in recent weeks.Sanders said Monday that the Senate “should have a chance to debate and vote on the key components of such a massive package.”“In poll after poll, Americans have showed their increasing disgust for [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s war machine and the humanitarian disaster it has caused in Gaza,” the senator added. “Enough is enough. We cannot continue to fund this horrific war.”

Russian Officials Say U.S. Is Getting "Dragged Into A War It Will Lose."

Last Saturday brought good news for the Ukrainian government. The US House of Representatives voted in favour of a $61bn (£49bn) aid package for Kyiv, which will be used to arm its military.The House also approved a bill that will allow the seizure and transfer to Ukraine of Russian assets frozen in America. The bills now move to the Senate for approval.Unsurprisingly, this did not go down well in Moscow.Hawkish former President Dmitry Medvedev condemned the "61 billion bloody dollars". He called for a new American Civil War that "would finally lead to the inglorious break up of the 21st Century's evil empire, the United States of America".Moscow's messaging is clear: there is no panic. But there is concern. The aid package can help Ukraine and hurt Russia.Monday's edition of daily newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets predicts Ukrainian strikes in the near future, "deep into [Russian] territory. But, most likely, on Crimea. And, of course, on the Crimean bridge".That bridge, linking the Russian mainland to the annexed Crimean peninsula, is a key target for Ukraine and has been attacked before.
