The Senate is one of the two chambers of the United States Congress, the other being the House of Representatives. It is a legislative body that shares responsibility with the House of Representatives for making laws at the federal level. The Senate is considered the upper house of Congress and has unique powers and responsibilities separate from those of the House of Representatives.

The Senate is composed of two senators from each state, regardless of the state's population, resulting in a total of 100 senators. Senators serve six-year terms, with elections staggered so that approximately one-third of the seats are up for election every two years.

The Senate has several exclusive powers not granted to the House, including consenting to treaties as a precondition to their ratification and consenting to or confirming appointments of Cabinet secretaries, federal judges, other major federal officials, and uniformed officers, as well as trial of federal officials impeached by the House. The Senate is also responsible for conducting impeachment trials of federal officials referred by the House.

The Vice President of the United States serves as the President of the Senate and may cast the decisive vote in the event of a tie in the Senate. The Senate also chooses a President pro tempore to preside in the absence of the Vice President.

The Senate operates under its own set of rules and procedures to conduct business, which have evolved over time. The Senate's legislative process is slower and more deliberative than that of the House of Representatives, which often leads to the Senate being referred to as the "world's greatest deliberative body".
