Godine 1993. savezna vlada donijela Vjerska sloboda restauratorski Zakon savezni. Zakon je namijenjen za zaštitu Indijanaca u opasnosti od gubitka radnog mjesta zbog vjerskih obreda koji su uključeni u ilegalne droge pejotl. Od tada su 20 države prošlo vlastite verzije "vjerske slobode" zakonima i 12 više uvele zakone ove godine. Pristaše zakona tvrde da Vlada ne bi trebala prisiliti vjerske tvrtke i crkve da služe kupcima koji sudjeluju u načinu života u suprotnosti s njihovim vlasnika uvjerenjima. Zagovornici zakona tvrde da je politički kontekst promijenio od 1992 i države sada prolaze vlastite verzije zakona s namjerom da diskriminiraju gay i lezbijskih parova.
