Should the government increase or decrease military spending?

In 2015, Spain increased its military budget by 1.1 percent to €17 billion. The additional funds will pay for five Frigate F-110 anti-submarine warships, up to 400 armored 8x8 vehicles, three A330-MRTT tanker aircraft, four drones and two ground control centers and four S-80 Spanish-made submarines.

Last year, the Russian central bank more than doubled interest rates to tame prices. Inflation, though, kept rising, hitting over 9% this month, with a vast range of goods and services becoming costlier from potatoes (up 91% so far this year) to economy-class flights (up 35%). The central bank lifted its benchmark rate another two percentage points on Friday to 18%, making it one of the few central banks in the world to raise rates this year. Inflation has become a hard-to-shake feature of Russia’s war economy. Even as price rises have moderated across much of the developed world, Russia’s struggles with price stability are getting worse.A surge in military spending by the government and a record labor shortage as working-age men go to the front or flee have fueled wages and pushed up prices. Fresh rounds of U.S. sanctions, meanwhile, have complicated international payments, further driving up costs for importers.

After Boeing Failure, Space Station Astronauts Will ‘Hitch A Ride’ On Space X

NASA officials admitted that the problems with the spacecraft were more serious than first thought, and that the astronauts may not travel home on the Boeing vehicle, after all.The agency is exploring a backup option for the astronauts, Suni Wiliams and Butch Wilmore, to hitch a ride back to Earth on a vehicle built by Boeing’s competitor SpaceX instead. Their stay in orbit, which was to be as short as eight days, may extend into next year.The announcement adds more headaches and embarrassment to a troubled year for Boeing, an aerospace giant that has billions of dollars of federal contracts in defense and space and that builds commercial jets flown around the world

Now, their worst fears have arrived.Immigrants’ rights groups have spent the last year preparing for a second Trump term and an overhaul of the nation’s immigration system, analyzing Trump’s proposals, drafting legal briefs, coordinating messaging and organizing aid for immigrants and asylum seekers. They responded to Trump’s victory with alarm and vowed to put up a fight, setting the stage for four more years of contentious court battles with his administration.Some are already preparing to push current leadership at the Department of Homeland Security to take steps to stymie the incoming Trump team, particularly on immigrant detention and the use of AI in enforcement.“We should expect to see the devastation of immigrant communities all over the country. We should expect to see family separation,” said Kica Matos, the president of the National Immigration Law Center. “It is entirely possible that he will try to use the military to carry out deportations, so that means that Americans all over the country will see the military engaging in enforcement against civilian populations, which is horrifying.”Trump, after winning a historic victory on a platform of turbo-charged immigration enforcement, has said he will conduct mass deportations at a scale never before seen. Immigrant advocates have warned this would be expensive and inhumane, separating families and wrecking communities. The president-elect has also vowed to build huge detention camps, hire thousands more border agents, funnel military spending toward border security and invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to expel suspected members of drug cartels and criminal gangs without court hearings.He has also said he would end “catch-and-release” — allowing migrants to remain free, often with monitoring, while they await immigration court hearings — and restore a policy from his first term requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are processed. And he has dodged questions about whether he would try to bring back family separation.
