To salvage his own political career, Netanyahu may prolong war

The Israeli war effort in Gaza intensified as the country’s leaders try to achieve their goals before international and domestic pressures force an end to active combat.

While the Biden administration has big incentives to push for an end to the war before the president begins his re-election campaign, Netanyahu has an incentive to prolong the fighting to try and salvage his own political career, said Brian Katulis, vice president of policy at the Middle East Institute.

“The clocks really are not synced here,” he said. “I don’t get the impression that the Israelis care that much about anything U.S. officials are saying right now if they are prodding them to end this quickly.”
